This is a comprehensive online course, the first in the world in French, aimed at teaching LCA methodology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/ciraig.org\/index.php\/mooc-acv\/\"> Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment online course<\/a> is designed for students and professionals who want to learn about life cycle thinking, embrace a systems view, and calculate and interpret the environmental footprint of a product, service or technology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course will guide participants through the principles and concepts necessary to describe a value chain from cradle to grave, calculate an inventory of emissions and resource consumption, translate it into impact indicators and scale it to a functional unit according to the principles of ISO 14044 and international best practices. These practices are used and have been developed in part by the experts of the CIRAIG, the International Life Cycle Assessment Reference Centre, founded in 2001.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The objectives are the course are to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Consider the principles of a life cycle perspective<\/li><li>Define the objectives of an LCA and lay the foundation for analyzing a product system<\/li><li>Conduct an emissions and resource consumption inventory<\/li><li>Describe the analytical framework for environmental impact assessment<\/li><li>Interpret and compare the results of an environmental footprint profile<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This MOOC represents a collaborative effort between <a href=\"https:\/\/epfl.ch\/\"><em>\u00c9cole Polytechnique F\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne<\/em> (EPFL)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/polymtl.ca\/\">Polytechnique Montreal<\/a>. It offers more than 20 hours of video lectures and practical exercises to develop skills in LCA, while using modern methods of educational technology. The MOOC is based on an Introduction to LCA course that has been given at Polytechnique Montreal (DDI8003) since 2013. It is intended as an introductory course for everyone as well as a pedagogical support for teachers who would like to move their teaching towards a reversed classroom approach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The contributors to the MOOC are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/ciraig.org\/index.php\/team\/manuele-margni\/\"><strong>Professor Manuele Margni<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> one of the pioneers and international experts in life cycle assessment methodology. He is a full professor at CIRAIG, Polytechnique Montreal and HES-SO Valais Wallis in Sion, Switzerland.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Pascal Lesage<\/strong>, known worldwide for his contributions to life cycle inventory and tool development. Pascal is currently an engineer for Environment Canada.&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/ciraig.org\/index.php\/team\/cecile-bulle\/\"><strong>Professor C\u00e9cile Bulle<\/strong><\/a>, internationally recognized for her contributions to life cycle impact assessment methodologies, especially the development of the Impact WORLD+ methodology. C\u00e9cile is a full professor at the CIRAIG and at the School of Management Sciences at the Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al (UQAM), in the Department of Strategy and CSR.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/people.epfl.ch\/francois.marechal?lang=en\"><strong>Professor Fran\u00e7ois Mar\u00e9chal<\/strong><\/a> is an expert in industrial energy systems at the Ecole Polytechnique f\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland. He leads R&amp;D activities in the field of computer-aided analysis and design of industrial energy systems, with a particular interest in the development of sustainable energy conversion systems using thermo-economic optimization methodologies.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On behalf of the CIRAIG, we would like to thank the students who participated in the creation of the MOOC: Flavien Binet, Mohamad Kaddoura, Julien Pedneault, Laura Debarre, J\u00e9r\u00f4me Lavoie, Camille Chabas, Titouan Greffe and Julien Walzberg.
