This research project undertakes a comprehensive material flow analysis (MFA) of plastics in Canada, using top-down statistical economic and bottom-up waste management data. The current phase focuses on developing an integrated methodology and utilisation of various data sources. The resulting MFA will support eco-design at the product level and inform circular economy strategies at regional and national scales. In the next phase of the project, we will explore transition pathways toward a circular plastics economy in Canada. This stage of the research will assess the feasibility and potential environmental impacts of these scenarios.
